Abstract

The present world is thinking and talking about sustainability than ever before. This is why the United Nations developed the Sustainable Development Goals (SGSs) to act as a roadmap for countries to follow towards individual and collective development. In fact, goal four of the SDGs targets at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. However, there being consistency in learning does not necessarily equate to there being a richness of assorted meaningful information for learners to be taught. Quality education can be seen as a facilitator for all the seventeen SDGs. Through quality education, poverty can be eradicated, hunger can be reduced, global health can be reduced, gender equality can be attained, water quality can be improved, sanitation can be enhanced, economic growth can be achieved, environmental conservation can be implemented and many other targets of the sustainable development goals. It is thus only a question of how to cleverly incorporate the agenda 2030 into the education curriculums around the world. This paper is a review of the various strengths and weaknesses of the present education system in Kenya and a proposition of some mechanisms that can be employed to streamline the system towards a future where each learner benefits the most with respect to their abilities. It also reviews ways and methods that can be utilized to ensure that education is one of the tools employable in ensuring the successful attainment of the sustainable development goals.
